Howdy

First I'd like to introduce myself I'm a 22 yr. old texas boy who loves diesel and I've developed a passion for built trucks since the first diesel I got when I was in high school. Recently I purchased a 1998 cummins 12v 2wd I've had it for a few months now and the other day when I got in it to leave I realized the clutch was out fast forward a little bit now I have the trans on the ground. I'm hoping to build the truck up to make some serious power I'm told that realisticly I can only make about 600hp. Since the main issue to get the truck back on the road is the transmisson is the main issue to get it back on the road what are my options ? I have looked in to a built nv4500 by ats but they want an arm and a leg ... Is there a better way of doing it ? What kind of internals would I need to have to support that much horsepower ?

Honestly. Best option is an nv5600, or call Firepunk and talk with lavon. See if he has anything up his sleeve

A 1 3/8" input and fix the 5th gear nut. That is all you need to build a nv4500. If you don't slap shift or speed shift it it will live just fine at that power level. For the record slap shifting or speed shifting the nv5600 will also result in a broken trans eventually.

As for the direct bolt up no it is not you will have to change some things to make that work. Get a good street dual disk along with what I posted above.

You can make far more than 600 on a 12 valve haha just depends on your budget and what kind of 600 horse you wanna make. As for the trans you don't a built one to hold power, it depends how you drive. Just need a good clutch like a 3600, or 3800 dual disk and the big input like stated. That will hold 1000 horse if your not launching everyday and speed shifting. Getting a built nv won't prolong life that much as they weren't designed for racing and could break just as easy. Only real upgrades are cryod parts which some independent companies do.

Since you didn't say anything had been done to your truck, I'm going to assume it's stock. Having laid that out in advance, I'm going to submit that

A) a 12V can easily make way, way more than 600HP and
B) even if it couldn't, a 600HP 12V is a helluva lot of truck. If you only ever make 400HP, it will be unrecognizable from what you have. OH! And
C) one of the things that makes a diesel so damn amazing is the part of the equation you didn't even mention: the torque. In a typical gas engine you see 600HP and think, "how much torque does it make? We know it makes 600HP, so who cares?"
Whereas with a diesel, we see it makes 600HP and think, "how much torque does it make?" And the answer is, enough to uproot a forest of redwoods... all at once.

Just sayin'

Thanks for all your replys as the information is very helpful, I am not the origanal owner of the truck and from what I understand the pump had been turned up and maybe bigger injectors , it smokes like a freight train which I assume is from the pump being turned up or a fuel plate change. I've had diesels before and currently daily drive a duramax lml but the cummins is new to me and all the help is appreciated

Also runnin somewhere in the range of 35 psi of Boost so I know it's not original , also are the stock turbos capable of that much boost or do I most likely have a bigger turbo ? How can I tell ?

The stock turbo will easily push well over 40psi, but more than 35 is generally frowned upon. They've been known to... not hold up well under that kind of boost. That said, I ran mine at 40psi for nearly 100K and it was still perfectly good and tight when I took it off, but from what I gather many folks aren't so lucky. If yours is rolling coal then it is certainly turned up.

I've heard that it's gonna smoke but shouldn't flood an intersection as it does now .. Could this be my fuel to air ratio ? For the 600 hp number what injectors should I be running ?
