Grid heater

Grid heater
I started my truck yesterday morning drove to work and came back 12 hours later and it was completely dead and would not take a jump. Took my optima battery out and had it tested, it came back bad, replaced battery and truck started just fine. Drove home and generator light came on and battery volt meter on dash would not fully charge. Got home popped hood while truck was off and noticed that my grid heater was smoking and the two big wires in the front kept getting hotter and hotter. Pulled those two wires for the grid heater off and started truck and betteries were able to charge and no generator light. Those two wires were sparking though! So my question does my grid heater have a short and that is what killed the batteries? Also if i disconnect the grid heater can i just trace those two wires back to the source and remove them? It does not get cold enough in california so i am not worried about it starting. Sorry if its hard to follow my thought process typing on a cell phone blows.
