beat dodge for home brew
want to get an older model , say pre 03.
I want the most dependability , to be able to run on home brew diesel , and last forever...
What are the advantages to the non computer 12 valve vs the computer one ?
What is the primary mechanical difference between gen 1 and gen 2.

You will definately want a P7100 pumped 12valve, i ran mine for 30.000miles or so on homebrew diesel without any problems or modifications...
i beleive the VP pump will shut down on you if you try that, they are highly sensitive to all kinds of stuff that the VE and P-pumps eat like cheerios....
I even ran mine on SOAP...... yes you read it right... SOAP !!!
P-pump over anything else...
Take it from a previous Duramax & Powerstroke owner

1994-1998.5 2nd gen...
you will get the VE in the older trucks but they won't make power like the P7100 trucks...
a stock truck will be a complete dog, not really much happening there BUT... you can easily modify and get 300whp for 0$...
i suggest a manual transmission truck as the automatic transmission trucks are prone to blow up the trannys when you modifiy them...
a clutch that will hold 600hp will set you back 800$ or so, but it will be the best upgrade you do to your truck...
happy hunting, hope you score a good truck...
