Default What do i look for when buying a grail truck

Guys i found a 1998 3500 5spd with a 12 valve, shes got 404,000mi, originally from Arizona, 1 owner. hes replace the nv4500, the dana 80 and the transfer case. The pump and lift pump are stock besides replacing the fuel shutoff solenoid. My real problems with it are theres, oil all over the front end of the truck, i mean every where and he says it goes through a lot of oil. Second the fifth gear nut has loosened up twice and hes losing the 3rd gear sencro
If Anybody has any imput at all it would be greatly appreciated (oh ya i forgot to mentioned its under $5000) Thanks

So basically you need a rebuilt tranny and gaskets somewhere in the engine. She has enough miles so a rebuilt wouldnt hurt either. If your plans include a fully built competition truck then you will have to do something in both areas anyways. Also in my opinion the grail trucks would be ext cab short box 4x4 5speed 12v. I guess it all depends on what your plans are for it and what the physical condition of it is. That being said, I will assume from reading your username you might be building a pulling truck. If this is the case my earlier comment about the ext cab short box is irrelevant and a dually would be a benefit. Just my .02 guess I never really liked/had use for a dually

However I just sold my 94 5speed 4x4 reg cab long box for 4800. All it had was a 0 plate afc tuning, single stack and a sport bumper conversion. So for 5k its not a bad price. Can always barter a little bit too.

wow thats amazing. So a fully built motor is outta the question. Still wouldn't be a bad idea givin her a rebuild. But then again what will that cost compared to a little extra oil now and then? For a cheap cummins like that you can't really go wrong.
