Default stock air box vs aftermarket intake

Hello guys this is my first post here, I have just bought a 1996 dodge cummins and have a question. My stock air box has a chunk missing out of it and before I buy a new one I was wondering if it would be better to buy an aftermarket intake. Things to take in to consideration I do go on a lot of dirt roads and it gets really cold and slushy here.

If aftermarket intake is best then which brand/style?
Any precautions or harm to the engine?

thank you

I have heard the stock intake is just as good as anything else. but if i were to do any kind of a different intake i would go with a BHAF. From what i hear and see these are the most common and some of the best. BUT my friends co worker has a 95 cummins with 480 hourse at the wheels. he knows his stuff way more then anyone i know and he just runs a stock air filter. he says they are just as good

from u pic looks like u just have an air filter right off your turbo? with more air comes more dirt and crap that can get sucked into your engine.

turbo2332

your sig is missing...

first gen tough

i felt a dramatic increase in power when i took off my stock intake, 480whp ok.... but my "filter notifier" would pop right in if i were to stomp it... so i beleive your friends stock intake is holding him back...

i know filters will allow more air flow but i doubt just doing an air filter you would feel a change. im sure if the air filter made that much of a different he would have one. they do make a difference but we live in maine so we have every element possible. dirt snow rain everything. having the stock is prob better for up here with all the harm full elements that an after market filter would allow through

Hehe, i live in Iceland....

Iceland is a small island in the arctic sea... we have salt, dirt, snow.... ice... sub 40°C (104°F) temperatures and all sorts of elements i'm sure you don't have...

a CAI did wonders for me, maybe it's more apparent because of the colder climate...

i'm pretty sure that milage got better too, at least felt like it...

I can see where a better flowing filter would kill MAF and AFM on newer trucks... but we're talking P7100 pump, all mechanical...
